ACTIVITIES

(I) Artificial Insemination 
This technology is used for upgradation of indigenous Cows and Buffalos by using Semen from exotic and indigenous Crossbred Bulls. This facility is available in 17 Veterinary Dispensaries and 45 Live stock Aid Centres of this District.

(II) Vaccination

(III) Dairy Development

Different schemes available for Dairy Development in the District are as follows : 
a. KSK (Krushi Sahayak Kendra)
The District Agriculture Office, Phulbani is functioning as KSK for the Kandhamal District.
In this programme people can get 25% subsidy ( for General category ) and 33% ( for S.C. & S.T . category ). People have to start the Dairy Farming with minimum of 10 Cows in a unit.The subsidy will be borne by APICOL, Bhubaneswar.
b. DEDS ( Dairy Entrepreneurs Development Scheme)
DEDS Scheme is implemented during the year 2011. The scheme will be closedby31.03.2012. In this scheme people can get loan for Dairy Farming starting from Rupees One Lakh to Five Lakhs. The Applicant has to pay 10% of the project cost as margin money. There is provision of subsidy of 25% for General and 33% for S.C. & S.T. farmers. The subsidy will be borne by NABARD. The applicant has to apply before the respective Veterinary Assistant Surgeons of their blocks. Other relevant information will be available with the V.A.S. of the different blocks.

(IV) Small Animal Development
According to the Geographical location of Kandhamal District, there is availability of more browsing area for goats, so there is rapid growth of goat population in this District. The tribal people are also having more interest on Goat Farming. The Department is providing different schemes for Small Animal Development to augment the income of the rural tribal people. The different schemes on which Goat Development Programme is undergoing as following : 

a. Introduction of Improved Sirohi Bucks
In this programme 47 improved Sirohi bucks were supplied in 47 villages of this district and the Kids born from this bucks are also good meat quality and better growth rate.

b. SGSY( Swornajayanti Gramya Sworojogar Yojona )
In this scheme our Department in coordination with the Block Development Officer helps the SHG ( Self Help Group ) to promote the Goatery Development for the tribal people. The BPL SHGs are eligible to get 2.5 Lakhs to 5 Lakhs loan for goat rearing, out of this a subsidy of upto Rs. 1,25,000 was also given to the SHG under this scheme. The subsidy will be borne by DRDA, Kandhamal.
There is availability of a goat breeding farm in the district which can supply the C.B. Sirohi bucks to the tribal villages. The farmers can avail this facility.

c. Goat Deworming Camp 
The Department is organizing Goat Deworming Camps in all the blocks. Due to Goat Deworming Camps the local goats dewormed against different external and internal parasites. Due to this the rate of body weight gain is higher in goats. So the farmers are getting more benefits from this .

(V) Poultry Development
Almost all the households of the Kandhamal District is having backyard poultry in their house. The poultry provide a good supplementary income to the rural poor people. The Department is implementing different Poultry Development Programmes in the district as follows :

Introduction of Vanraj Cheeks
In this programme 2-3 SHG groups of each GPs of the Kandhamal District will be selected. The groups will be linked under different schemes like SGSY, ITDA, OSFDC, ATMA in which the groups will be provided with 300 laying birds which will provide 3 eggs/ week from 6 Months onwards. The eggs so produced will rendered the needs of the MDM ( Mid Day Meal) programme of schools. And the children feeding programme in Anganwadi centres. Our aim is to produce 16 lakh eggs per month in the District.

There is 2 Hatchery Unit present in Kandhamal District. One is District Hatchery at Phulbani and another at Balliguda. These hatchery units will provide the required cheeks for this programme. The programme will be implemented in coordination with the other Administrative Officers of this district. 

(VI) Camps
The Department is organizing different Animal Health Camps throughout the year. The different health camps organized in the district are as follows :

a. Animal Health Camp cum Awareness camp under ASCAD programme

In this camp all the cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat & poultry birds of the village are treated with
suitable medicines supplied by the department.

Headquater Veterinary Institutions

The Sub-Divisional Veterinary Office, Phulbani is established in the year 1983.This Office comprises of the following Officers to control the Veterinary activities of the Phulbani Sub-Division.

The Veterinary Hospital is situated in the prime location of the Phulbani Town. It covers No. of Villages and a population of Lakhs of Cattle, Goat, Sheep, Pigs and Poultry. This Veterinary Hospital comprises of the following Officers to control the Veterinary activities of the Phulbani Town.

The District Poultry Hatchery Unit is established on 13.01.2011 under the SGSY infrastructure fund having capacity of Hatching 5400 eggs per week.

The District Diagnostic Laboratory is established on 20.12.2009. Blood, Stool, Urine, Skin Scraping, Nasal Swabis conducting here. This has been financed by R.K.V.Y.

The District Training Hall is established on 08.11.2010. Training for Vets, Paravets and Farmers are conducted here. This has been financed by RKVY.

The Goat Breeding Farm is situated at Dadpaju which is 1.5 Kms from the District Head Quarter under SGSY infrastructure.The improved Sirohi Goats and Bucks are kept here for up-gradation of local breeds. One Farmer Training Centre is present here for training of farmers.

Fodder Farm conducts the supply of Fodder Roots to different V.D. and L.A.C for Fodder Cultivation.
